The KM-43 Photopolymer Plate is engineered for artists who prioritize precision over physical depth. With a 0.017" emulsion thickness—roughly half that of the KM-83—these plates are the professional choice for high-resolution Photo-Intaglio where maintaining delicate line integrity is paramount.
Ultimate Sharpness: The thinner emulsion minimizes "light bleed" during exposure, resulting in sharper edges and more accurate reproduction of micro-details.
Faster Washout: Due to the reduced polymer thickness, the KM-43 develops more rapidly than thicker plates, streamlining your studio workflow.
Steel-Backed Strength: Despite its thin profile, the steel backing provides the structural rigidity needed to withstand the high-pressure environment of a Takach Etching Press.
Eco-Friendly Processing: Fully developable in lukewarm tap water. No hazardous solvents or acids are required, making it ideal for shared studio spaces.
| Feature | KM-43 (Thin) | KM-83 (Thick) |
| Emulsion Thickness | 0.017" | 0.033" |
| Primary Use | Fine-line Intaglio / Halftones | Deep Etch / Relief / Letterpress |
| Detail Retention | Highest | Excellent |
| Ink Capacity | Moderate | High |
To achieve a full range of tones from black to white, we recommend:
Stouffer 21-Step Scale: Crucial for finding your "solid step" (usually Step 14-16 for the KM-43).
Aqua Tint Screen: Essential for creating the "tooth" required to hold ink in large dark areas.
Vacuum Frame: Recommended for ensuring perfect contact between your film positive and the thin KM-43 emulsion.
Can I use KM-43 for relief printing? While possible, the KM-43 has a very shallow etch. For relief and letterpress, we highly recommend the KM-83 for its deeper 0.033" emulsion.
How do I store KM-43 plates? Store in a cool, dry place inside their original black UV-protective bag. Unexposed plates have a shelf life of approximately 12–18 months.
