Marks from the Matrix • Normal Editions Workshop Collaborative Limited Edition Prints 1976-2006 highlights contemporary artwork created by artists at Illinois State University’s Normal Edition Workshop (NEW). Artists include Garo Antreasian, Phyllis Bramson, Byron Burford, Rodney Carswell, Nancy Davidson, Jane Dickson, Julia Fish, John Fraser, Sidney Goodman, Denise Green, Alex Grey, Arturo Herrera, John Himmelfarb, Mark Innerst, Suzanne Jackson, Ilya Kabakov, Wayne Kimball, Donald Lipski, Dennis Oppenheim, Richard Rezac, Kenny Scharf, Rosalyn Schwartz, Kiki Smith, Buzz Spector, Robert Stackhouse, John Whitesell, and David Wojnarowicz. Founded in 1976 at Illinois State University, NEW is a distinctive, nonprofit print research facility affiliated closely with the School of Art within the College of Fine Arts and the educational mission of the University. Marks from the Matrix is edited by Richard D. Finch, Professor of Art and Director of NEW and Veda M. Rives, Associate Director of NEW, with contributions by Mark Pascale, Associate Curator of Prints and Drawings at The Art Institute of Chicago; David Keister, Master Printer and Visiting Artist Professor, Grand Valley State University; Buzz Spector, Professor and Chair, Department of Art, Cornell University; and James D. Butler, Distinguished Professor of Art, Illinois State University. NEW has collaborated to date with more than 100 artists to produce more than 200 limited print editions. These artists, who come from a wide variety of fine arts disciplines, include emerging talents and individuals with national and international standings. Many of the prints can be found in public and private collections, including major collections around the world. NEW celebrates its 30th anniversary in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the University. This publication catalogues the accomplishments of this workshop and provides insightful commentary on the subject of printmaking and artists who explore the medium for its expressive potentials. As such, Marks from the Matrix is intended to become an important research tool for students and scholars in the field.
